From the 1800s onward, the difficulty of quarrying and shaping porphyry made it an impractical choice for many decorative uses. However, the appeal of its aesthetic, the deep distinctive red and rich purple hues meant it remained in high demand. In the early to mid 20th century, artisans turned to faux porphyry to achieve the appearance of the prestige stone.
